Our expert instruction guarantees all students will be skateboarding on their very first lesson!
Founded by Ben Kerrigan, a Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneur award winner in 2012, Skate Catalyst is the culmination of many years of work in helping build connections within East Coast skateboarding communities, shops and parks, especially in Boston and Metro West. Ben is an avid skateboarder, experienced counselor and skillful event facilitator.
Accredited Skateboard Instructor, Ben Kerrigan
Among other accomplishments, Kerrigan is an accredited skateboard instructor with a current SPS certification. Ben received his formal skateboarding training from Ben Wixon, the master trainer for Nike Skateboarding. SPS (Skateboarders for Public Skateparks) is a nationally-recognized skateboarding curriculum focused on safety and effective teaching methods. The accreditation process sets the professional standard for skateboard programs, allowing students to find high-quality providers.
Ben has also worked as an assistant skatepark manager for the BSA’s National High Adventure base, The Summit (located in Glen Jean, WV). The skatepark is the 2nd largest in the U.S. in total square feet. He led safety classes, supervised instructors and developed skateboarding programs for skaters of all ages.
Community Focus & Mentoring
In 2016, Ben successfully introduced leadership-focused skateboarding camps for the City of Boston Park & Recreation Dept. and Youth Enrichment Services. For many of these camp participants, it was their first skateboarding or skatepark experience.
On his way to achieving Eagle Scout rank, Ben achieved a “top ten counselor in training” rating as a member at one of the oldest Boy Scouts of America (BSA) camps in America (Yawgoog in Rockville, RI).
Ben founded BostonSkateboarder.com in 2009. This online video news and entertainment site is exclusively devoted to regional skateboard-related news, features, promotions and events. The site and its members have actively advocated for the development of The Lynch Family Skate Park in East Cambridge, MA.
In high school, Ben created and launched his own brand of skateboard wax called Chunked Wax. Chunked has expanded beyond the original handcrafted product and now promotes and sells a range of innovative gear through local skate shops including Eastern Boarder, Max Hesh and Orchard Skateshop.
Ben hopes that he can someday contribute to bringing a public skatepark to hometown of Needham, Massachusetts (Like on Facebook to show your support!).
